Spend your Poe points on AI Butler

Every paid Poe plan can spend its points through Poe's API. One key reaches the many models Poe hosts; here is how to connect it to AI Butler and what to watch.

Spend your Poe points on AI Butler

Updated October 17, 2026 · Meowport Pro · About 6 minutes

Every paid Poe plan comes with a daily or monthly allowance of points, and Poe lets you spend those same points through its API. That API speaks the OpenAI chat-completions format, so Meowport's AI Butler can use it with one key, one address and one model name, and reach the many models Poe hosts. This guide shows the setup, how points are charged, and where Meowport treats this provider a little more carefully.

Before you start. Prices, allowances and policies below are Poe's, checked on October 17, 2026. They change without notice; confirm them on the provider's pages before you rely on them. You pay the provider directly: when an allowance runs out, requests may stop or cost extra. Keep your API key private, and if you suspect it leaked, remove it from Meowport and revoke it with the provider. You are responsible for the key, the requests it sends and the provider's terms. Meowport has not run a live test against Poe; the steps follow the provider's documentation.

Who this is for

  • You have Meowport Pro. AI Butler is a Pro feature; a custom model service only chooses which model answers.
  • You pay for a Poe subscription. Poe states that all subscribers can use their existing points with the API, and that free accounts cannot reach paid models through it.
  • You are comfortable with each request's conversation and the pet context it needs being sent to Poe, and from Poe to the model's provider, under their terms, the same as with any custom provider.

What the points cover

  • Poe sells plans by points, from about 10,000 points a day on the smallest yearly plan to several million a month on the largest. Points are granted daily or monthly depending on the plan, and unused points do not roll over unless Poe says otherwise for a plan.
  • Through the API, points are deducted from the account that owns the key, at the rate each model lists. Poe's stated intent is to charge roughly what the underlying model providers charge; its reference rate is US$30 per million points.
  • When your points are gone, Poe does not document what the API returns. The option it names is buying add-on points, which stay usable for a year. Plan on requests failing until the next grant or a top-up.

Step 1: Create a Poe API key

  1. Sign in to Poe and open https://poe.com/api/keys.
  2. Create a key and copy it. Poe does not say whether it is shown again later, so store it safely right away.
  3. Poe supports several keys since March 2026 and lets you revoke each one on its own. One key just for Meowport makes a later revocation painless.

Poe's own warning is worth repeating: a key makes the owner's entire point balance available to whatever it queries. Treat it like a password.

Step 2: Connect it in Meowport

  1. Open Meowport and go to Settings → AI Butler.
  2. Choose Custom model API (marked Advanced).
  3. Fill in the three fields:
    • Base URL: https://api.poe.com/v1
    • API Key: paste the key from Step 1.
    • Model name: a Poe bot name, written exactly as Poe shows it, for example Claude-Sonnet-4.6, GPT-5.4 or Gemini-3.1-Pro. Capital letters and hyphens matter.
  4. Tap Fetch models to confirm the key works. Poe lists every model the API can reach, with its pricing; pick one from the list instead of typing if you prefer.
  5. Tap Save model settings.

Private bots are not available through the API; stick to the public models in the list.

How Meowport treats this provider

Meowport recognizes a handful of providers by their address and gives those models its full trust. Poe is not one of them yet, so the Butler runs it in its cautious mode: it checks the model's answer against its own rules before acting, it does not let the model look up extra records on its own, and it may ask you more often or decline an unusual request. Everything else works the same way: the model list, action cards, undo from the chat, and the Before saving choice.

To read a clinic report or a lab photo, tap Test this model's image support once in the settings. Poe passes images to the model you chose; whether the model can read them depends on that model, so Meowport verifies it before offering the attachment.

Step 3: Try it

Open the Butler and say something small, for example "Mochi weighed 4.2 kg this morning." The Butler drafts a weight record and, depending on your Before saving setting, saves it or asks first. Whatever you choose, it always asks before changing a record you already have, and it never deletes one. Anything it saves can be undone from the chat.

Costs and limits

  • Each Butler request costs the points the chosen model lists in Poe. A small model makes a short request nearly free; a frontier model costs more. Look at the price a bot shows before you make it your daily driver.
  • Poe applies a limit of 500 requests per minute per user, far above anything the Butler sends.
  • Poe ignores structured-output settings, so Meowport asks the model for its structured reply in plain words. That works with capable models and is one reason to choose a well-known one.
  • When your points run out, the Butler's requests fail and Meowport shows Poe's message. Nothing is written.

Privacy and what is sent

With a custom model service, each request sends your message, any images you attached, and the pet records the Butler needs for that request to the provider, under the provider's terms and privacy policy. Poe's privacy policy says that what you provide to bots is shared with the AI model providers behind them, while your Poe account information is not; Poe does not publish how long API requests are kept. Meowport's privacy policy describes the custom-provider path. Apple's on-device model stays available: switch back any time in the same settings. To stop using Poe, clear the key in Meowport and revoke it at poe.com/api/keys.

Troubleshooting

  • Authentication error. The key was pasted incompletely or has been revoked. Create a new one and paste it again.
  • The model is not found. Poe bot names are case-sensitive. Tap Fetch models and pick from the list.
  • Requests fail although the key is new. Your plan's points may be used up for the day or month, or the model is paid and your account has no subscription. Check your balance in Poe.
  • Image attachments are not offered. Run Test this model's image support in the settings, or pick a model that reads images.

Your responsibilities

  • Check the provider's pricing and terms yourself; this guide reflects October 17, 2026 and cannot follow later changes.
  • Keep the API key private. Do not paste it into chats, screenshots or shared notes.
  • Watch your point balance in Poe. You, not Meowport, pay for what the key spends.
  • What you send is handled by Poe and by the model's provider under their own policies, outside Meowport's control.
  • AI can be wrong. Review what the Butler writes, and talk to your veterinarian before any medical decision.
  • A Meowport is a personal record, not a certificate.

Third-party plans, prices and policies belong to the providers and were checked on the date each guide shows; they can change at any time. You pay the provider directly, an allowance can run out, and extra charges may apply. Keep your API keys private. You are responsible for your key, your requests and the provider's terms; Meowport only passes your request on.

The API is independently provided and operated by its third-party provider, not Meowport. Choose a provider you trust. Requests may send conversations, relevant pet records and selected attachments to it and incur charges. Read its terms, privacy rules, available regions and pricing first. Meowport does not guarantee third-party accuracy, availability or pricing. AI can make mistakes or omit information. Verify results before accepting or saving them; do not base decisions solely on AI. Check AI answers, pet, dates, values and units before saving; health decisions belong with a veterinarian. Stopping a request may not cancel provider charges. Meowport cannot manage third-party accounts, refunds or data deletion. These notices do not exclude responsibilities that cannot lawfully be excluded.
